The pockets debate

J.Crew Factory dress, sold out, similar here; wedge espadrilles, similar here.

When it comes to pockets, some love them, and some just don’t. I, however, have been crazy about them lately, and these days, they’ve become a deciding factor whether I buy something or not. I have given up on buying dresses I really liked, just for the fact that they didn’t have pockets!

While the main purpose of pockets is practicability, as in, to free your hands from small items like phone, keys, wallet, or whatnot, in most cases, when it comes to women's clothing, they simply do not work — most are just too small, that is if they exist at all.

Now, women's clothing is generally made of lighter fabrics, and between the cut and style, pockets many times don’t add any value, not to mention that they can actually take away from the way a piece, like a dress, looks. That is even truer when placing something like a phone in our pockets - its weight will drag the material down, and apart from them looking “off”, it can ruin your clothes altogether, especially dresses.

With that said, there are dresses that are made of thicker fabrics, like cotton, which hold things in pockets pretty well. For example, this dress looks like an identical, albeit, shorter version of the one I’m wearing in this post, and as I mentioned in it, my phone was in my pocket the whole time we took those photos. Looking at them, you wouldn’t be able to tell that my phone’s in my left pocket!

Ultimately, I don’t know what purpose you want pockets in your clothes to serve, especially when it comes to dresses. Sure, it would be SO NICE to not have to carry a bag every time I go somewhere (I find it annoying lately), but considering that we have to carry so many more things these days (phone, hand sanitizer, face masks, kleenex, wallet, keys, etc.) that seems like a pretty impossible task. In my case, I’ll just settle with “resting” my hands in my pockets - for me, that’s more than enough, so please, bring on the pockets!

Dresses with pockets...

Are you team “pockets” or team “I don’t care”?

Until next time.
