It's time to get your hair spring and summer ready

Since moving to Florida, I found out pretty quickly that longer hair (past shoulders) is a no-go here. As I wear my hair down all the time, the heat and humidity make it unbearable, so, even though I’ve had my hair short or medium-length for most of my life, I now make sure that I keep it above my shoulders (it needs a trim now).

When it comes to haircare, I believe that you don’t have to pay a fortune for products in order to get great results, and as I have found the ones that work for me, I now swear by them and recommend them over and over.

My hair is thin and pretty frizzy, and until a few years ago, my main concerns with it were the breakage and the split ends - seriously, split ends were part of my life constantly, even shortly after cutting my hair.

Truthfully, I have not found a product to completely get rid of the frizziness (other than hairspray), but I have discovered the products that prevent split ends and breakage. For full disclosure, the latter still happens from time to time, simply because my hair texture is so thin, and, of course, due to external factors out of my control (stress, drying weather/wind, salty air, etc.). Still, I’m not as concerned about the breakage (as long as it’s not out of control), as I am about the split ends, ugh - those are so unsightly, to say the least - and I firmly believe that it is this Hask Argan Oil Repairing Shine Hair Oil that has kept them at bay for years now.

Worthy to note, when we traveled for four months through Europe in 2019, this hair serum kept my hair split-ends-free, and took care of other hair issues, including minimizing frizz — I promise, it’s a good one! In case you’re curious, I covered all the beauty and care products I brought with me on that trip here.

As far as breakage, I swear by this black castor oil treatment (travel-size here), as well as the conditioner - they truly work as they strengthen my hair and promote growth.

While many swear by this Olaplex product for repairing their hair, it is not cheap, and the cost can add up when you need to constantly buy it (though if you’re a Beauty Insider, take advantage of the sale going on now), so the black castor oil treatment is much more affordable. Also for repair, I wholeheartedly recommend Nexxus keraphix damage healing treatment masque - I use it as needed (which, honestly, is not too often these days) but it sure works (though it might not be as cost-effective if used often).

Important to know: for the best result from your hair products, you must ensure that you remove buildup… If you feel that your favorite shampoo and conditioner, or any other hair treatments “stop working”, it may be because your hair is “saturated” with dirt, sweat, product remnants, etc., and your treatments/haircare items can’t “get to it”.

To prevent that, I use this charcoal shampoo (it has a pleasant citrusy smell) to detoxify my hair about once a week throughout the year (using it daily can lead to dry hair), and this tea tree oil one during hot weather. I love how it smells (like tea tree oil, though it doesn't last long after the hair dries), and the cooling effect it provides is *a chef’s kiss* on hot summer nights (it inevitably cools my entire body in the shower, and even after, as I’m not one to take cold showers).

As far as daily care, for detangling, I apply this argan oil (reviewed in this post), focusing on the ends, and brush my hair with a wet brush (I swear by it and it’s the only one I use now). Lately, that’s all I’ve been doing - I don’t even own a hairdryer anymore, and I don’t use any hot tools on my hair, probably the reason why it is healthier than it’s ever been before. If I do want to style it, I’ve found and been using this cream spray (as well as this one) - I like what it does to my hair (I reviewed it in this post), and it lasts a long time as it doesn’t come in a tiny bottle.

In conclusion, I think that detoxifying your hair, applying less heat on it (or, at the very least, using a good heat-protectant), and hair oil might be the best things you can do for it. For the best result with the hair oil I recommended above, test the amount, until you figure out the magic number - trust me, if my fine hair is left shiny and bouncy after applying it, it shouldn’t leave yours oily either.

Of course, there are so many hair types and textures out there, and results may differ, so, if you find the ones that love your hair and your hair loves them back, stick to them. As with everything, consistent use produces results, so be patient (but don’t forget to also cleanse your hair to remove buildup).

I hope you found this post helpful.

Until next time.

xoxo,

Em
