My experience with The Ordinary skincare

Check these posts as well for more reviews and updates regarding my experience with The Ordinary.

During our 4-months trip through Europe, I tried my best to take care of my skin. While I haven't had any major issues with it, I could tell that it was in need of some TLC towards the end of our trip.
I have skipped sunscreen on some days (absolutely DO NOT recommend it), fooling myself that a hat would be enough to protect my face, and as a result, I developed some pigmentation on my forehead and around my eyes. Also, my skin was a bit dehydrated, dull and tired, and my pores were more visible than usual. I knew that once we returned back to the States, I had to get serious about my skincare and address the problems mentioned above.

I was doing research for efficient, free of nasties but affordable skincare, when I came across The Ordinary. Maybe I was living under a rock but I don't remember seeing them before, or maybe I wasn't paying attention. I was surprised about the low prices and great reviews all over the internet, so I made a list of the products I needed for my skin concerns.

After my research, I ordered 9 of their products as a trial. I ordered the EUK 134 0.1% from their Antioxidant range, the Lactic Acid 5% + HA from the Direct Acids, the 100% Plant-Derived Hemi-Squalane, 100% Plant-Derived Squalane, Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 and Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA from their Hydrators and Oils, the Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG and Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% from More Molecules, and the “Buffet” from the Peptides variety.

I placed the order on a Saturday, received free shipping due to order being over $25, and the next Friday evening I had the products in my hands. I was impressed that the order receipt was verified and signed manually. The products were received in perfect order. I really liked the fact that the bottles are made of glass #environmentconscious. Needless to say, I was excited but also nervous to try them; nervous because there's a whole science to using the products, but the company does a great job at explaining on their website. After rechecking the online regimen advice, I went on to create my own. Also, I think it’s important to note that I have tested these products in two different climates - New York, and Florida - and had different results with some of them.

The good news is that I have had noticeable results with these products after only a few days of use. The best news is that I had no negative reactions to any of these products, however, please note that I don’t have sensitive skin. My favorite by far is the Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%. Apart from it making my skin smooth, and visibly minimizing pores, it also helps keep blemishes at bay, and fights fine lines. This product has become a holy-grail for me.

Other favorites are the Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 (always apply on clean, damp skin - right after a shower is ideal), and the Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG. Though the latter hasn’t made a big difference in my under-eye circles (they are mostly genetic in my case), I love applying it to my entire face for a smooth, luminous and “awake” look. The same applies to the Buffet serum.

EUK 134 0.1% is a product that, in my case, is slow-working, though I do like how it makes my face look overall. I only use it at night because it has an oily consistency, and it takes a while to be absorbed into the skin. I have only recently been using this product more consistently, and I’m starting to notice my dark spots beginning to fade. I don’t necessarily experience redness on my skin, so I can’t speak to that. Since this is a strong antioxidant, I feel a little bit of a warming on my skin when I apply it, but that’s pretty much it when it comes to reactions.

I have to admit that I have been nervous about using the Lactic Acid 5% + HA, as it should not be used on broken, peeling or compromised skin. For that reason, my thoughts on this products are still TBD, as I have not tested it enough.

My experience with 100% Plant-Derived Squalane has been no different than with any other face oils I have used. They don’t usually absorb into my skin, but do leave a healthy and hydrated complexion after use. For that reason, I only use the 100% Plant-Derived Squalane at night. The 100% Plant-Derived Hemi-Squalane though, fully absorbs after a few minutes, which makes it another favorite of mine for use at any time.

Now, I had different results with the Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA. Though it has a thick consistency, it was not providing enough hydration for my skin while in NY state (though it might have had something to do with the changing seasons - we were there in late fall). It, however, worked great as a basic moisturizer while in Florida. For the price, it is 100% worth it, and can be used with different serums to address whatever skin concerns you might have.

My overall experience with The Ordinary skincare has been great. I intend to be a loyal customer and repurchase my favorites, as well as try more of their products. The fact that their products are so affordable makes me love them even more.

Have you tried The Ordinary products yet? What has been your experience with them?

Until next time.

Em
